Noninertial Zero-point Fluctuations: a Laboratory-oriented Introduction

چکیده
Old results of Letaw on scalar vacuum radiation patterns that could be of interest for phonon analogies are used to emphasize the radio-metric nature of the Frenet-Serret invariants of the stationary worldlines, rather than sticking to the thermal interpretation of the vacuum excitations as apparent for the uniformly accelerated quantum detector (Unruh's interpretation). I focus next on the electromagnetic vacuum noise surveying the Hacyan-Sarmiento approach for calculating electromagnetic vacuum physical quantities. The application to the circular worldline led Mane to propose the identification of the Hacyan-Sarmiento zero-point radiation with the ordinary synchrotron radiation, but here I provide some simple counter-arguments. I also briefly discuss Bell and Leinaas' proposal of considering the electron as a Unruh-DeWitt spin polarization detector at storage rings. In the final section, I sketch the similarity between the Unruh effect and the anomalous Doppler effect. A separate observation of the latter would mean a confirmation of the possibility of the first.

Modeling, Identification, and Control of a Spherical Particle Trapped in an Optical Tweezer
We provide an introduction to modeling, identification, and control of a spherical particle trapped in an optical tweezer. The main purpose is to analyze the properties of an optical tweezer from a control systems point of view. By representing the noninertial dynamics of a trapped particle as a stochastic differential equation, we discuss probability distributions and numerically compute first...
متن کاملA Self - Dual Gauge Field , Its Quantum Fluctuations , and Interacting Fermions
The quantum fluctuations about a self-dual background field in SU(2) are computed. The background field consists of parallel and equal uniform chromomagnetic and chromoelectric fields. Determination of the gluon fluctuations about this field yields zero modes, which are naturally regularized by the introduction of massless fermions. This regularization makes the integrals over all fluctuations ...
متن کاملQuantum friction–fact or fiction?
Two parallel dielectric plates separated by vacuum interact through zero-point charge fluctuations and experience friction when the plates are in relative motion and the vacuum is sheared. Even at the absolute zero of temperature, residual quantum fluctuations remain because the zero-point energy gives rise to ‘quantum friction’. In a recent paper, the reality of these fluctuations is questione...
متن کاملQuantum density fluctuations in classical liquids.
We discuss the density fluctuations of a fluid due to zero point motion, assuming a linear dispersion relation. We argue that density fluctuations in a fluid can be a useful analog model for better understanding fluctuations in relativistic quantum field theory. We calculate the differential cross section for light scattering by the zero point density fluctuations, and find a result proportiona...
متن کاملNon-inertial quantum mechanical fluctuations
Zero point quantum fluctuations as seen from non-inertial reference frames are of interest for several reasons. In particular, because phenomena such as Unruh radiation (acceleration radiation) and Hawking radiation (quantum leakage from a black hole) depend intrinsically on both quantum zero-point fluctuations and some appropriate notion of an accelerating vacuum state, any experimental test o...
